Those Most At Risk
They look healthy, energetic, and full of potentialโbut their generation is the first to carry a hidden burden from the very start of life. Research has already detected microplastics in human blood, lungs, and even the placenta, meaning exposure begins before birth. From the air they breathe to the food and water they consume daily, these particles are now part of their environment in a way no previous generation has experienced. Whatโs especially concerning is that these plastics donโt just pass through the bodyโthey can lodge in tissues, accumulate over time, and potentially interfere with normal biological processes at the cellular level.
For young people, this isnโt a distant or theoretical riskโitโs a lifelong exposure curve that started in the womb. Emerging evidence suggests that nano-sized particles may cross biological barriers, including those meant to protect critical organs, raising questions about long-term impacts on hormones, fertility, and overall health. While the full consequences are still being uncovered, one reality is already clear: todayโs youth may carry a higher lifetime body burden of plastic particles than any generation before them. Understanding that risk is the first step toward reducing exposure and protecting long-term health.
